The last few weeks I have been keeping a close eye on the blackberries around here. They are everywhere. Last year we had very little success in canning. I am a novice but determined, I tried again this year. Success! I have big plans for my pressure cooker (thanks Sharon!). I love the satisfaction of having food that I know came right from the source. It is hard work picking blackberries. I have a mild allergy to the pollen that comes off of it and man did my arms hurt for a couple of days. But what a lesson for the kids. I like that they know how much work goes into getting their food, be it from ourselves or others. All of my kids are pretty good eaters. Adventurous (except Oscar), and ravenous. I would say that I come from a long line of "foodies". We are all pretty passionate about food. We enjoy our shows, especially No Reservations and The Splendid Table. I am very excited for an upcoming broadcast where my sister Alex will be catering the event through her work. We like to try new things and experiment with new recipes. Ultimately though, we have our staple meals, the ones we always fall back on. So, let's branch out. What are your five most frequently used meals? Maybe we can get some ideas from each other! Here's my five.....
#1. Beans and tortillas. We have making pots and pots of beans this past year. This is my ultimate comfort food. My grandma had refried beans for every meal and I will never taste any like hers. A big plate with a warm flour tortilla is my favorite meal.
#2. Meatballs. Pete makes meatballs often. The kids love them and they are kind of his specialty.
#3. Brats. I never really cared for Bratwurst until I met Pete. Must be all the Oktoberfest. We eat a lot of bratwurst.
#4. Breakfast for dinner. Who doesn't love this? Pancakes and eggs? Come on, cannot beat that. Except if you add bacon.
#5. Pizza. I am a 15 year old boy when it comes to pizza. I could eat it everyday. Seriously. Every time we have pizza Pete says, "No pizza for at least 6 months." I love to make pizza from scratch. Pizza dough is so easy to make and then you can customize each individual pizza. I especially love mine with mushrooms, garlic(lots), onions, basil and artichoke hearts. Delicious.

1. Salad! We love the herb salad from Earthbound Farms or Trader Joes, with any kind of protein. I really like mine with a gardenburger on top, did you guys know they changed their recipe? I had the new one at work today and was disappointed.
2. Pasta. I make a huge batch of pesto and freeze it for when I need a really quick and easy dinner. I also make big batches of tomato sauce, I need all the lycopene I can get.
3. Soup. My favorite is to roast tomatoes, peppers, onions, garlic, etc. and puree it all together. I usually have some of this in the freezer as well, and sometimes I add it to black beans, which I make a big pot of about once a month.
4. Edamame. We always have some in the freezer, and David makes it with a garlic ginger sauce and maybe some rice noodles.
5. Cheese and crackers. This is one of my all time favorite meals. I could not live without cheese. Throw in some wine and fruit and maybe chocolate for dessert and I'm done.
And of course I agree with breakfast for dinner, you can never go wrong with eggs, and David is the iron chef of breakfast.
1. Beans and tortillas. We had this tonight. And you're right, Matilda, Mama made the best.
2. Potatoes. Usually skillet with eggs and tortillas or scones or muffins.
3. Chili verde. I like to make this because it lasts a few days. John is very easy and doesn't complain about eating leftovers.
4. Stuffed pasilla chili. It's almost a meal by itself. Charred pasillas stuffed with sauted onions and monterey jack. Put it in a cast iron skillet and cover it with a batter made with cornmeal, cream of corn, milk and baking powder. It's pretty good.
5. Meatloaf. With mashed potatoes and corn.
We are boring. I think the hardest think is not cooking dinner, but coming up with and idea of what to cook. I too LOVE cooking shows and I should branch out a little more.
1. Spaghetti - Prego is our friend. Just add meat.
2. Chicken and rice - a la cream of chicken soup.
3. Taco soup - this si a recent addition since I found out it was so easy to make.
4.Whatever meat is in the freezer(pork chops, ribs, chicken...)mashed potatoes(instant) and corn.
And the good old stand by...
5. Cold cereal - only needs milk.
I really do like to cook, I need to broaden my horizions.
1.Tortillas and beans (with cheese) will never be the same as grandmas.
2.Soy Sauce Chicken. Grandma made this too, broil the chicken and when it is almost done pour soy sauce over it, so quick and easy.
3.Tortilla Soup. I just really like it and you can use just the shredded chicken out of the soup and wrap it up in corn tortillas!
4.Bread, cheese & roasted garlic. My favorite is havarti and a loaf of bread from columbia city bakery. Just so you know only I eat this the kids would rather have hot dogs!
5.Dirty Rice. This is my all time favorite. Nana made the best but I do a pretty good job.
