Maiden Voyage

Today we had planned a stay at home day. I told Hans and Olive that they didn't even need to get out of their PJ's, it's just that kind of day. Hans was happy about this and even thanked me. First, I brought down all my sewing patterns and sorted through to get rid of the ones I will never use. Then I organized them all by category. As I sew a little longer, I have had fun altering patterns I have or trying to make some up. Usually I will use newsprint to play around with them. A few weeks ago I bought Hans an over sized pad of newsprint for his drawing. When he realized I'd be sewing today he immediately set about creating some things he would like for me to make him. I will definitely be putting some of his ideas to use but to get acquainted with my new machine I thought I'd do something quick and easy.
Hans is a really skinny kid. I love to make pants for him because the length and waist on store bought pants never match up for him. He loves it as well because then he can choose his own look. Navy and white hounds tooth wool bell bottoms are just what he needed.
Now, it is Wednesday. I have a million list ideas but after reading Annishas post last week I thought Top Five favorite books would be a good one. So, here's mine.....

#1. Me Talk Pretty Someday by David Sedaris Actually, he is probably my favorite storyteller ever. I was so envious that my dad went to a performance of his, not knowing who he was.
#2. Ramona the Pest by Beverly Cleary I have read every Ramona book a thousand times. I read them a couple of times a year just because I truly enjoy them. There are other kis books that I reread regularly as well. I also had the pleasure of meeting Beverly Cleary a couple of times.
#3. The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini I know that I am not alone in this, there are a great many fans.
#4. To Kill a Mocking Bird by Harper Lee As I said last week, I just read this again and it never fails to make me cry.
#5. The Red Tent by Anita Diamant This is a book that I always recommend(as Annisha knows). When I was 13 I read the Bible over the course of a year and have endeavored to complete that again this year. It is funny how books that are fiction such as this and The DaVinci Code (which I also enjoyed) can make you look a little differently at some parts of the Bible. Well, that and I am an adult now.
Once again, I am anxious to see what everybody else has to say. As I've said before, I am long winded and could probably add several more but I will stick with my 5 . Feel free to add on (18 Brittney!!) I'm really digging this whole list thing!

I have to do two at once since I missed the last one. Favorite shows:
King Crimson- Hard Rock Hotel Las Vegas
The Residents- House of Blues Las vegas as well. ( both shows were good but the circumstances surrounding the events made them even more memorable)
Rush- Numerous shows ( I was kind of obsessed)
YES- Park City Utah ( I gushed over the band backstage like a 12 year old school girl, and got autographs....
Sunny Day Real Estate- Bricks in Salt Lake (My band had toured with them the year before, but this show was the one I really enjoyed)

And on to the books.
The Stand by Stephen King
The Gunslinger and the series thereafter by Stephen King (see a pattern?)
Sideways by Rex Pickett
Fight Club by Chuck Palinuk
Heart of darkness by Joseph Conrad

I love that Pete put up his list! As a side note(before I put up my new list) I have the ring tone on my phone "Tom Sawyer-Rush" when you and Pete call. I will forever think of Pete whenever I hear a Rush song. Did he tell you we even had a dog named Geddy? Anyway, back to my Book List. I'm going to probably have to add more later, but off the top of my head...
Understood Betsy
Little Princess
Harry Potter(all of them)
Mrs. Polifax (all of them)
The Thornbirds(but hated the movie)
The Secret Garden
And I also liked the Red Tent. I'm excited to see what books end up on peoples lists! Good Job Annisha for putting this one out there :) I'm impressed with your goal to read the Bible this year. I've never read the whole thing through. Just pieces at a time. Thats a good goal. It was good talking to you today. I enjoy our chats and I enjoy you! Love Ya!

In no particular order:

1.Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery
I love the entire series, which follows Anne and her children.
2.Where The Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein
I actually enjoy all if his stories and poetry, but this one I checked out of the library repeatedly in elementary school.
3.To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
It's a classic.
4.Bridget Jones's Diary by Helen Fielding
This one made me literally laugh out loud several times.
5.The Way of the Wolf by Martin Bell
I first read this at church camp. I have read it for myself, and to others, several times. It is a great read aloud.

I could easily surpass my sister's last list of 18 on this one, but I have go to work. This list could be several if it were genre specific.

Okay who are we kinding? I like reading like everyone else but April will always surpass me on this topic. Having two kids and being a K/1 teacher aide I read more kids books than anything these days and I love them all! That was always my favorite part of teaching preschool. As a matter of fact I went to Barnes and Nobles yesterday and got nothing for myself but did buy each girl a book. I will say that my favorite book of all time was Island of the Blue Dolphins. Sami read it last year but it did not have the same effect on her that it had on me. I hope I can better satisfy you next week Mattie. Oh and April, all I had to do was read Anne of Green Gables and I knew it was your list long before I saw your name. April actually took a Shel Silverstein poem and some pictures of Samanatha and made them into a beautiful gift one year. And April, Where The Sidewalk Ends in on Sam's bed. It is one of the books she is reading right now.

April and Brittney,
I like Shel Silverstein as well. Sharon gave Siobhan Where The Sidewalk Ends when she was younger. Siobhan is not much of a reader but writes a great deal of poetry and has always enjoyed that book. What I wanted to say though, is that I read somewhere that Shel Silverstein was such a regular at the Playboy mansion that he had his own room. That has just always been interesting to me. Anyway, I am always happy to hear from you!

First, I have to give props to Pete for commenting, hopefully you'll inspire David to join in. And on the Stephen King end, reading "It" when I was 14 was terrifyingly great.

On the subject of books, it's so hard to compile a list of favorites. I'm sure we have all read hundreds of books, many of them enjoyable, but I can't remember the names or authors of 95% of them! The most memorable books for me are those from childhood, where you read just for the sheer fantasy of it. And so:

Alice in Wonderland/Lewis Carroll (Tie for my favorite book of all time with The Odyssey by Homer)
A Wrinkle In Time/Madeleine L'Engle
The Boxcar Children/Gertrude Chandler Warner (Ever want to run away when you were a kid? Or now?)
Trixie Belden/Julie Campbell (Way better than Nancy Drew for me)
House With A Clock In Its Walls/John Bellairs

If you're familiar with these books then you know that I like mystery, and even though it's not a little kids book like the above, I have to say I love Calamity Town by Ellery Queen. I also love Greek mythology, and the King Must Die was another great teenage read. Annisha, totally agree with the C.S. Lewis. And in anticipation of my dads' list, I predict you will definitely see Wind In The Willows on it.
