I have a serious sweet tooth. I always have, I believe I inherited it from my Grandma. She developed diabetes as an adult and had to seriously monitor her sugar. I can only imagine how hard that was for her. Every holiday or party that involved any sweets she would counter with a cup of hot coffee. "That cuts down on the sweet," she would say. I can appreciate that logic. Part of my job as Grandmas chauffeur was driving her to See's candy at Easter time. We would leave several bags in hand including a few for the road. It's good having someone that shares a weakness with you. That is why I have made a concerted effort to introduce my children to the world of desserts. Hans has proved a quick learner and often suggests desserts to go with dinner. His dad is not at all a sweets kind of guy. I appreciate his concern over their health but I am really trying to open them up to the world of pastries and baked goods more than sugary candy. Who can argue with that? Besides, Hans weighs in the negative so he can use a little butter and cream. I like to bake, it is fun and relaxing. My mom always had something good around and I like to try to recreate those food memories for my kids. Last week I was telling Hans about the eclairs my mom used to make. They were filled with fresh whipped cream, not custard, and they were huge. Hans was impressed and has been telling me how much he would like to try them. Happy to oblige, we are going to get on that today. Who doesn't remember a special dessert their Mom prepared? We are a family of food memories, what about you? What are some of your favorite desserts? I'm hoping for some more good ideas! Here's mine.....
#1. Coconut cake or cream pie. Love it. When we were in
Laughlin with my dad we made a late night pie run that I will never forget. Usually my choice for my birthday cake. My mom has made it for me several times, as well as my Dad and Alex. Alex put lemon curd in hers, another favorite!
#2. Pears in cream sauce. My mom used to make this a lot and it is one thing I have not been able to re-create. It is a hot dessert and man is it delicious. Someday I
will find this recipe.
#3. Angel food cake with cream and berries. I like to justify this one by adding that angel food cake is fat free.
#4. Three Ladies of Spain Cheesecake. I made a couple of these in Utah and ate a piece each time.
#5.
Capirotada. This is a Mexican bread pudding that is traditional at Christmas or Easter. I made this a few times at Easter. I remember Grandma critiqued this one and made a few suggestions. I think one of them was to serve it with coffee.
****UPDATE**** They liked them!!

What an appropriate topic! Today at work we debuted our new summer desserts, so I'd already eaten five desserts before noon. Sweets have always been high on my list of priorities, so I have a lengthy list of favorites. These are my favorite family desserts:
Sliced apples with sugar - Grandma would peel an apple in one long curly strip, slice it and let us douse it with sugar.
Grandmas yellow cake with chocolate frosting and bananas
Dads angel food with strawberry frosting - a favorite birthday cake of mine, the frosting is awesome. He even brought this one year when we camped for my birthday, now I know bugs also like this cake.
Moms phyllo cups with cream cheese and cranberries - a Christmas party staple, and a dessert that I have never seen anyone else do.
And Matilda, I wonder if this is close to what you're thinking about:
3 lg pears peeled, cored, & halved
3 Tbsp butter, diced
3 Tbsp sugar
1/2 cup whipping cream
Put pears round side down in flame proof dish, top with butter and sugar. Bake 20-30 min. at 350, basting often until pears pierce easily. Remove from dish and cook liquid over high heat until caramelized. Pour in cream bring to boil, serve over pears.
Thanks for the recipe! I will try this pronto. You forgot to add the walnuts on top of Grandmas cake. My personal, favorite part. I tried the phyllo cups one year and discovered that I do not work well with phyllo dough. The apples with sugar I still enjoy and have also passed onto the kids. Siobhan remembers them and asks for them like Great Grandma used to do. Love that.
Oh Yum!!! I could live on desert! I think Zak has the right idea ordering desert before every meal! My list could go on forever, so I will try to pick my favorites...
1. Creme Brulee = HEAVEN I have tried to master this desert to no avail. I wil keep trying. Troy's grandma even sent me a torch.
2. Sugar cookies - I love frosting.
3. Matties Cheesecake and Apple Cake. - I don't really even want to learn how to make this because it's your specail desert and I look foreward to it whenever I see you!
4. Graham Cracker and Chocolate Puding Desert. - A Lindgren family favorite.(except for Missy)
5.Chocolate - Donuts, Cake, Pie, Cookies, Ice Cream...
Now a quick funny story... We were asking the kids at church if there was anything that would make primary better and my friends little boy got this really thoughtful look on his face and serious as could be said "Cake!" I think that says it all :)
I think I could list five a day for a month, so here's my faves.
Happy Face cookies from Scotch bakery. I know they'll have these in heaven.
Alexandra's lemon bars.
My mother's pumpkin spice cake. She also made a mean mince meat pie. Leftover pie dough was rolled up with cinnamon and sugar and sliced into what she called cowboys.
Your Mom's phyllo cups. These were a particular favorite although the entire dessert table could be on the list.
Grandma's rice pudding. No one else seemed to like rice pudding so I scored big time. I always felt like she made it just for me.

I think I might be related to you and your grandma. I inherited the same serious sweet tooth.
1. Cheesecake--Yours was to die for.
2. Chocolate chip cookie dough--not so much the cookies, just the dough.
3. Pumpkin pie (or any other pie)
4. Truffles (or anything chocolate)
5. Every other dessert not included in the above
Someone has been holding out on me! What are these Dunford donuts?! Where you starting me out slowly with Banbury Cross Kim?
