BEAR

I have been trying to get this picture posted but it was not cooperating before. As Pete said yesterday as we reminisced, I was hell bent on seeing a bear. I hadn't on our previous Yellowstone trip and I was not going home without a bear picture. One of the fun parts of Yellowstone is when you see a few cars pulled over and traffic is slowed and you just know there is something good to see. I told Pete a good idea would be a flag of some sort that people could wave and then you would know what you are looking for. Lame I know, but it really would make things easier. I had my eyes peeled throughout the day and then I saw a ranger truck and lots of people stopping. Pete slowed so that I could hop out, I just knew it had to be a bear. And it was! Pete and the kids walked back and I was happy that the kids got to see him also. So, trip complete. Bear...check.
So, I made Olive these culottes for our trip. I liked them, they are nice and loose and they cover her a little more than the booty shorts that I seem to find everywhere. I mean really, booty shorts? For toddlers? I think not. I got extra lucky that she liked them as well and when a stranger asked where I had found the Jessie outfit from toy story, it made Olive love them even more.

So I felt more were in order. We are heading to Sequim today to see my parents, all 4 of my parents, and I thought I'd whip up a pair yesterday for the trip. I usually get pre approval on fabric selection from Olive. She refers to fabric as "sew". After I finished yesterday I realized that my 80's nostalgia is still running high. Yeah, she approved this but I suggested it. I also had a pair of pink flamingo shorts in junior high. They were a favorite. My mom bought them at the Joe Boxer outlet in San Fransisco. I was lucky that my mom enjoyed shopping and had such a great fashion sense. I was also really lucky that my Grandma indulged us with all the latest "in" things. I have been thinking about that a lot lately. All the fads and trends. It is kind of fun to talk with Pete and see some of the differences by state. So, I'm curious, what fads did you follow, or want to follow? Here are a few I remember.

#1. Swatches. This has been a topic of conversation around here lately. I loved these and really want one again. I had a couple and my favorite had fish in it. Remember the swatch guard? As Pete reminded me, they didn't really work, but they were cool to have. I looked at some on ebay and when I read that 1988 is considered vintage, I went back to bed.

#2. Guess jeans. These were the "it" jeans. I remember my mom bought me a skirt at Nordstrom. My mom is a bargain shopper and she hit the sales like no other. I wore this skirt for years. My grandma bought me a pair of overalls when I graduated 8th grade. I wore them to Great America the next day when it was about 90 degrees and almost passed out from heat stroke. But I looked cool.

#3. Tube tops. This I will always remember. I wanted one so badly, they were very Three's Company, and my mom said no. I remember her saying that it wouldn't stay up and I fought and argued and on my birthday I got one at K Mart. I think it was in 5th grade. I was already probably a c cup. It did indeed fall, actually pulled down, and that was the end of my tube top days.

#4. Michael Jackson zipper pants and jacket. Yeah, that's right, I loved him. It was Thriller baby. I had the red zipper jacket and black zipper pants and if I had my way I would have also had a jherri curl.

#5. Sun In. I grew up amongst blond, tan surfers and I wanted that sun bleached hair so bad. I started with vinegar, and then some hydrogen peroxide and finally went all in and used the sun in. ORANGE. Not a good look, but I remember loving it. I also dabbled in the colored hair mousse.

I am really excited to see the list this week. Don't let me down, I know there are some good fads that I probably haven't ever heard of. I'll be posting from Sculleyville the rest of the week. Yankee Doodle birthday boy will be 33 on Friday! The same age I have been claiming for the last year!

I do remember grandma being extremely hip to the latest fads! Emporium loved her.

1. Jelly sandals, everyone had a pair of these except for the Sheppard girls. Mom thought they were tacky.

2. Plastic bracelets, you usually bought them in a pack of 10, different colors and some had sparkles. The more you had the cooler you were.

3. Overalls, i did get a pair of overall shorts in San Francisco during high school and i loved them!

4. Polo shirts, Mattie rocked this one for a while.

5. Doc Martins, i never really followed this fad but they were very cool, i think mattie also rocked this too!

I'm loving the pics from the trip! Anyway on to my list...

1. Knickers - In 5th grade this was the hit. Best if they were tan corduroy with buttons.

2. Guess Jeans - preferably acid wash.

3.Stretch pants that went under the bottom of your foot... I can't remember what they are called. But I had several pair.

4. Pinning your levi's so they were totally tight around your ankle.

5. Oh.. I had forgotten about this... NEON. Best if you had several colors of neon mixed together. I remeber Ricky Schroeder on Silver Spoons with NEON green socks and matching t shirt. WAY COOL!

Before I list, I just want to say I love your trip photos and stories. I'd love to see and hear more. I have always wanted to go to Yellowstone and Mount Rushmore. Now I want to go even more, especially after having the road trip aspect added to it. I love road trips. How did you get such a good bear picture? I see them every summer in Mammoth, but never get a picture. Did you use zoom? Did you take a lot in row? Did Todd get a cowboy hat? On to the list. I was more into doing my own thing, but with an older sister always into newest, coolest thing, I ended up following some fads.

1. Pegged my pants and had the big scrunched down socks.
2. Jelly sandals
3. Swatch
4. Plastic bracelets, linked and twisted together, and worn just like Ricky Schroeder when he was in "Silver Spoons".
5. Lace-trimmed ankle socks worn with pumps.

1. Mullet hairdo, circa 1987. Although back then we called them sflb's or short front long back pronounced sfilby. All business up here but a party in the back.

2.Breakdancing zipper parachute pants. I did a "knee spin" on a zipper during a performance once and it hurt like hell.

3. Wear and Tear skateboards. Two brothers who lived in Utah that started up a local skate fashion industry. It was super popular for about two years.

4.Baseball caps with flaps in the back. Kind of like a fabric removable mullet.

5.Cowboy shirts, with snaps. Always cool in my book....

Luisa- I just want to clarify that I bought my first pair of Doc Martens in 1987 and had to go to extensive lengths to order them from the UK. They did not get popular until several years later. As a matter of fact, I was teased for awhile for wearing those boots.

Kim- Stirrup pants!! I saw some of these yesterday at the thrift store and remembered how unflattering they are. I wish I had thought to pin my pants. I just did the fold over and up.

April- Yellowstone is amazing,as is Rushmore. I hope you can go soon, it is a great road trip. Also, there is a lot of fishing, both in Yellowstone and through onto South Dakota. I used the zoom and got really lucky with the bear. I have about 10 pictures of him from the back before he turned around. Todd in a cowboy hat! How did I not think of this? Off to the barbie clothes......

Pete- I would give a million dollars to see a video of you performing in zipper pants. Your mullet haunts me in my dreams....
