The Name Game

It' s been nice having all this time with Pete lately. Yesterday we went to Flaming Geyser since it was so nice out. He is trying to catch a steelhead. Talking with John usually gets him excited to get fishing, not that he isn't usually. So far, nothing. The kids and I hung out at the smaller river area and they had a great time exploring.

They have been playing pretty well together lately. The hardest thing is getting them away from the TV. We called to cancel the cable but it turns out you pay more when you do that, we have the package deal. So they gave us our introductory rate for a year and we still have cable. So, I just unplug it. We made a fairy home last night under our tree and Hans is in heaven. He spent most of the evening keeping watch, even though I told them they come while we sleep. He woke me up once in the middle of the night to let me know that he saw some gold speckles outside. Maybe light bugs, maybe fairies. When he woke this morning he made a mad dash outside and was beyond excited that one of the fairies left behind a hat in their bed of moss. Also, there was fairy dust everywhere. So today we have a lot of fairy house renovating to do. He wants them to be happy and keep coming back.

We were going to go gold panning today but you have to have a permit. They are in the mail and soon we will be prospecting. It really is fun. So, we are keeping busy, Olive didn't even make it into bed last night.
Onto the list. I don't know for sure who anonymous was but let's go with the suggestion. Baby names are fun, so many to choose from. When I was pregnant with Siobhan, my mom liked Scarlett. Hans was originally going to be Max because Pete wasn't keen on having a Johannes the third at first. I wanted to name Olive, Astrid, like the Pippi Longstockings author, Astrid Lindgren, but Pete flat out refused on that one. Sharon was telling me about a friend of hers that just changed her name because she was bored of hers. I can't imagine that. I think I would be so hurt if my kids changed theirs. I put so much thought and time into them. Siobhan dislikes how butchered her name gets due to the Gaelic spelling. But it is so beautiful and so representative of her heritage. She has my Moms middle name, Louise and also has Sheppard thrown in there for good measure. Oscar was just a name that I loved and when he was born I just knew it was right. His middle name is Valenzuela, for my grandfathers middle name. My grandfathers first was Melquiades, another mouthful. Hans is a given. Olive is named for Pete's grandma . I toyed with another Matilda and calling her Millie, like my grandma. But I just loved Olive, it suits her nicely. Her middle name is Jane, like mine. I am named for my two grandmas. Matilda, my maternal and Jane, my paternal grandma. Her actual name was Martha Jane, but she always went by Jane. Lucky for me, because Matilda Martha is not really cool. So, onto my five.

#1. Abraham. I have had several dreams recently about a baby named Abraham that my grandma is caring for. I never had thought of that name before but I really like it. I think my sister Alex had mentioned that as a candidate for a future baby of hers. That would be great, although I like how close Lindgren and Lincoln sound.

#2. Paloma. This was another top choice for Olive. I don't think it would have fit her at all but I love the name. I mostly wanted it due to this song by Lola Beltran. My moms all time favorite. I love this song, it gives me chills every time I hear it.

#3. Hank. Pre- King of the Hill I entertained this name as a choice for my second baby. I actually was going to name him, William Henry Renee, like my uncle and call him Hank.

#4. Socorro. I like this name a lot. I also like the name Soledad. My thinking was that I use the name Socorro, which derives it's meaning by the Catholics from Our Lady of Perpetual Assistance, and I would always have a helper. My grandmother asked me not to use Soledad.

#5. Achilles. My grandma had a brother with this name. He was my great grandmothers oldest baby. He was born in Mexico and my great grandmothers husband was traveling with his band to a wedding when they were ambushed and murdered by Indians. One of the men rolled into a ditch and afterwards brought back a watch to my great grandma from her husband and relayed the news. I was obsessed with this story for awhile, it was so dramatic. My great grandmother boarded a train and traveled to Arizona with her baby. My grandmother said that on the train she could hear her husbands ghost calling her nickname, Kuka. I have often played this story in my head, it's like a movie. Anyway, Achilles just seemed like a heroic name and I liked it. Oddly enough he went by his nickname, Ben. Maybe my mom can explain how Achilles gets to Ben?

One more thing. This is kind of fun when you are bored. Now, let's see some names!

Let's see, if Sami was a boy we were thinking of going with Aaron or Max. I was supposed to be an Aaron if I were a boy. But it was always Samantha MacKenzie for a girl. She was named for my Dad, Samuel. Besides it is a great Scottish name! When I was pregnant with Meag Scott was deployed so I sent him a list of names I liked and let him decide. I still have those lists. If she were a boy she would have been Wyatt. I like it because it is such a strong name. Who knows, maybe one too many trips to Tombstone! For a middle name it was always Scott. So she now, much to her dismay, is Meaghan Scott. Other names we considered were Grace, Fiona and Tabitha. I still love these names.

I think you did a wonderful job in naming your children. They are all so suited for their personalities. I love all of your girls' names too. All family names passed down. I think that is special. On one spelling err.. Your great-grandmother was called Cuca. Also, you were actually given both middle names of your grandma's. My mother's first name was Maria, her two sister's had Maria for first names too. Here are some of my favorites.

1. Paloma, white dove. This is what I wanted to name Alex. Your dad had visited his Uncle Alexander in Scotland and was very fond of him. So in his honor, Alex was named.
2. Joaquin. This was my grandmother, Soledad's,{could this have anything to do with Grandma not wanting you to name your baby, Soledad?} second husband. I loved him, he was so good to us. We called him Tata.
3. Rueben, not for the sandwich. I wanted to name my son this. But, it was not to be.
4. Luna, moon. I like this name. I think I might stand alone on this one. But, I think it's pretty.
5. Kenji Shabuya. I love this name. He was a wrestler when we were kids. I wasn't a wrestling groupie or any such thing. But, somehow this name still holds strong.

Mom- Thank you for the correction. I did know that grandmas first name was Maria, thanks for the reminder. She suggested Jose Maria for a boy. She told me that Soledad was too sad a name for a baby. I like the Rueben name, could it be for American Idols "teddy bear" Rueben Studdard? You know, I think John may be warming up to having a baby around. Did you enjoy the Lola Beltran video?

Britt- I remember Tabitha being mentioned. I also remember Wyatt and I thought that would be great if you had a babay Wyatt and a cat named Cody. I love your girls names. I've missed you! No blogs, few comments, I didn't even know Scott was back! I hope you are good, let's catch up soon(for real)!

My girls' names all have something to do with music. Go figure. We considered family names but didn't want to offend anybody by choosing one and not the other. My mom's family names would have been Japanese. Can you picture my blonde blue eyed girls with Japanese names? And my dad's family names are just not appealing so we came up with our own names.

Alexia Emily--Ryan has a piece of guitar equipment called the Lexicon. He liked "Lexi" so we went with Alexia so we could use the shortened version Lexi. Emily came from a Pink Floyd song "See Emily Play".

Elise Julia--I got a little more say in this one. Elise is from the Beethoven song "For Elise". I loved playing this song on the piano as a child and always loved the name Elise. Julia came from another Pink Floyd song, I think it is called "Julia Dream".

Some other names I liked...

1) Stella--My all time favorite, but Ryan didn't like it for some reason.

2) Madeline

3) Elena

4) Meredith

5) Halima (arabic meaning gentle)

A fun coincidence with Alexia's name. When we were moving to Sandy I was packing up my closet and got my wedding dress out to pack and noticed on the tag, the brand name of the dress was "Alexia".

Lets see:

1. Buster. My mom had a cat named Buster and I always liked it. We had a cat named Caesar which I also liked for a boy.

2. Emily is a favorite for a girl and I like the Pink Floyd tie in. I have the original vinyl of that song.

3. Lucinda for a girl.

4. Jinks. Don't remember where I heard it but I always thought it would be a cool boys name.

5. Of course Matilda, Luisa and Alexandra will forever be my favorites!

1. Sheppard, my maiden name and first pick for a boy.

2. Abraham, a family name and a longtime favorite of mine.

3. Rose, sweet and simple. Socorro Rose was a name I've had picked out for years, but it just doesn't go with Weitzman.

4. Cecilia, NOT after the Simon & Garfunkel song, just a beautiful name.

5. Evan, Lucille, Gabriel, Amelia, this list could go on for awhile. I might have to have 7 kids or more to use them all up.

Trisha- I like Halima. I haven't heard that name before. I love your girls' names. I am really curious now what Japanese names you would have picked AND what kind of family names are on your dads side!

Alex- I think you should still consider Davids choice of Emma. I am determined to call one of your kids baby spice. You have a long way to go to get to a Williams size family, better get cracking. I have tried the " I have more names" argument for more kids, but Pete isn't biting.

Abraham is a good name. I have only had two student's named Abraham in the past 8 years. One was named for the president because he, like Lincoln, was born Feb.12, just like me. And that is why I like the name Abraham. A lady in my bible study has a new grandson named Lincoln, and a granddaughter named Aurelia. I love the name Aurelia, as well as Vivi Anne (must be separate for pronunciation reasons), and Shelby. Ben is a strong, dependable name. I also like Luke and Joseph. One of my favorite names is the one my niece Meag gave to her cat, Carl. Who has a cat named Carl? Only Meag. That will always make me laugh.
