Spelunking

Today was cave day. The pinnacle of the trip. We had a reservation for the Kings Palace tour at 10 am sharp. We made a stop in the town of Carlsbad for coffee and breakfast. We stopped at Blue House Bakery and it was delicious! It is always great to find a really good latte when traveling.
I am not even quite sure what to say about Carlsbad caverns. It was one of the most amazing places I have ever seen. I was initially a little bit scared about being so far below the ground. I was also nervous about the impending elevator ride, not for me, but for Hans who is scared of them.
It turned out he was fine with it. We traveled 850 feet down the elevator. That alone was pretty cool. There is windows and they turn the lights out so you can see the rocks as you go. There is not a great deal of clearance! Once you get out, there is a snack shop and souvenir stand. For reals! It was so 1960's and I loved it.
I may have taken about 200 pictures and none of them do justice. There is just no way to accurately capture how huge these rooms are. Or how beautiful it all is. I was really glad that we decided to take a ranger guided tour in addition to the self guided jaunt we had. At one point the ranger, Siobhans future husband, turns the lights out. This was told to us at the beginning so it was not a surprise. What was a surprise was the full 4 to 5 minutes it actually stayed out. It was AMAZING how dark it was and equally amazing that grown ups that are asked to be quiet to listen, lose their minds when the lights go out. Seriously. I enjoyed the dark for about 30 seconds.

After our cave experience, my very sweet husband drove us to Texas. As I may have mentioned before on this blog, I had been to Arizona, Nevada and Hawaii when I met Pete. Not bad, but hardly the 47 or so states Pete has visited. In the last four days I have been in Utah, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico and now TEXAS! The kids were just as excited as I was!
Oscar declared how lame we were that we pulled over, set up a camera on timer and took this photo. That is, until two cars pulled in behind us to do the same. Also, how huge is that sign?! Everything is bigger in Texas.

Up until now, I felt like Todd was getting a pretty sweet ride. I try to limit the amount of time he spends in the hands of the kids. Sometimes he loses his head. Both figuratively and literally. When we were on our way back to KOA today Pete stopped at a thrift for me. It wasn't great, but Oscar found something that made him so excited he was willing to spend his own money.
Peep Todds sweet ride! He is out of control in this thing! Look out ladies, Todd is out and single and ready to mingle. Tomorrow we are heading back to Albuquerque. I am excited for some fresh flour tortillas, more margaritas and some wedding band shopping. See you back here tomorrow, can you believe this streak?
