We have landed.
Greetings. Guess where Todd landed today! Roswell, NM! And he loves it.
This has been what Oscar has most looked forward to, as far as this trip goes. We watched an amazing docu-comedy called Six Days in Roswell, in anticipation of this trip and there was so much to be inspired by in it. But before I get to that I should say that I fully expected a tourist trap.
The air here is definitely heavy with kitsch. All the streetlights have aliens heads. Most buildings are neon and there are aliens everywhere. But, there is also a lot of history here and we went to a great museum. The Roswell Museum and Art Center had some really great artwork, a great look at the history of Roswell from Native American to Hispanic to present days. There was a great collection of rockets and the workshop of Dr. Robert Goddard. They also had a moon rock from a New Mexico native astronaut that walked on the moon with Apollo 17. It was also interesting to learn there was a POW camp here that housed a great number of German soldiers during WW2.
The visitor center was really lovely and they were so helpful and knowledgeable. I particularly loved that we got a picture all together, thanks to them. Even if Oscar was not cooperative.
It was a different story when we got to Alien Zone. After watching that movie, all Oscar wanted was a picture like the guy took. Him, in an outhouse, reading a paper, next to an alien. Being the kind mother that I am, I did my research and found out exactly where I could make that happen. So, we paid and entered the most amazing rooms of photo opportunities. I now own a picture of every one of my kids in the outhouse. And 6 of Oscar.
Pete cuddled up to some aliens as well.
Todd was glad he was better and didn't miss out on some opportunities of his own.
The amount of pictures we took here was a little bit redonkulous. All four kids were begging for a picture at every turn.
I am sometimes a little wary of the amount of emotional investment we put into Todd. We pulled into the Carlsbad KOA tonight to rest up for some cave exploring tomorrow. Sitting around and looking through our pictures, Pete said that this picture of me and Todd was one of his favorites. Todd is something special.
Unfortunately it was super windy today. We didn't have to do a lot of driving and we were able to stop along our way. We saw some really great ghost towns and a lot of cactus. Our campground is really nice. The kids swam, despite it being not that warm and super blustery. I really wanted to share this picture. It is when his sister is most stressed out with him that Oscar is most happy. Brothers, geesh. Good thing she has Toddy.

I'm love love loving your blog!!! Loving all the great pictures! It sounds like an awesome trip! Really good family time! I love the Oscar teasing sister bit. Reminds me of Pete teasing Missy until she locked herself in the bathroom to hide and Pete climbed on the roof to tease her through the skylight..."I can still see you!" Brothers. So many fun things you've seen. And I know God loves you and we all love you! Glad you got to have that experience. I'm so glad your sharing this trip with us!
I didn't know Oscar was capable of the happiness he looks like he's enjoying in that photo!! Olive can really bring out the best in him, eh? Roswell looks incredible! Your kids will never forget that pitstop.
