Don't cry Alex, they're back.

This past weekend when my mom was here I was anxious for her to put up a list. She hasn't had a computer and has not really been able to keep up with the blog. I was happy that she did and it was fun to talk about the lists together that night. I will be glad when my Mom gets her computer set up and maybe even John will type a list. If we could somehow get everybody that reads this on here how awesome would that be. Anyway, when we were talking this weekend my Mom had said something about New Kids and that brought up a comment from John. He recalled what a pain Alex was about the New Kids at that time in her life. He went on to add that he once dared to question their greatness and Alex started yelling at him "What have you done with your life?!" This has to be one of my favorite Alex lines to date, due to the context, and has quickly become one of my new favorite sayings. I hope John is prepared for this. That's right, they're back.
I love that she was so into them. I really miss that sort of passion and enthusiasm for things when you are a kid. My kids have a mix amongst them. Siobhan is not really "into" anything in particular. Oscar has a million interests and is really into collections of certain things. Hans is kind of scattered and besides Legos doesn't have any huge interests yet. Olive is still a little young though she starts every sentence with"Remember from Spongebob?......". She is getting into doll playing which I love. I wonder what they will grow to really enjoy. Hopefully for Hans it won't be cooking. At the grocery yesterday he asked if cat would be a healthy choice. When I advised him against it he asked about dog. Maybe at Rositas in Salinas. Anyway, what do you like to do? I can easily name 5 things that have been hobbies at some time in my life. Once again, doesn't need to be now. Most of mine are things I enjoyed as a kid. So, five hobbies I have had...

#1. First, I'd have to say Barbies. My sisters and I had hundreds of Barbies. My grandmother bought us a doll for every holiday as well as any garage sales. Amongst them I had Brooke Shields, Bionic woman, Donny and Marie. All three of us played with them although Alex could spend hours.

#2. Music. I consider the violin a hobby. It was fun and consumed a lot of my time.

#3. Sticker collecting. I want so badly to start this fad again. I tried with Siobhan once and got my first of many eye roll/clearing of the throat responses. I had pages of scratch and sniff and puffy stickers. I would take my albums to trade at school. This must be brought back! I'm getting Olive an album today!

#4. Sewing. I actually enjoy other crafts as well, this just is my favorite. I love fabric and would probably be happy just collecting it and never making a thing. My new machine is so fun and I think when you buy something like that it should include an hour of babysitting a day. Hans has started sewing as well, mostly embroidery right now.

#5. Thrift shopping/garage sales. My sisters and I started very young. My mom NEVER misses sales. She told john this weekend if sequim doesn't have decent sales she will not live there. Seriously. I do consider this a hobby. I don't go more than two or three days without checking the thrift stores. I have pretty good luck and also sometimes eBay to justify this habit and make extra money to thrift some more. Vicious cycle.
Once again, I look forward to hearing about things you have enjoyed. I hope to hear from Annisha, she has been MIA and I hope she is alright. Alex, you don't get to include NKOTB, this has been established already. Also, David doesn't get to include you, he is making Pete look bad. Have fun!

www.nkotb.com - There is an awesome preview of their new song. It has a very touching tribute to the band and where they came from, brought tears to my eyes :)

I thought of you Alex when I heard about NKOTB yesterday. I am really having to think about my list this week. I bet April could write one for me better than I can. But I will give it a shot.

1. Scottish Dancing - It was all consuming. I started dancing so young that it is my main memory from childhood. I still love to go to the games and watch the dancing. As a matter of fact Scott built us a platform before he left so the girls could learn how to dance.

2. Barbies - April and I had a ton of Barbies. Every Saturday morning we would watch Smurfs and set up the retail store and play for hours.

3. Orcas - For a while I collected EVERYTHING Orca. Mattie I'm sure you remember our trip to Marine World. April had to sleep under the sink! That's the weekend Scott earned the "freak" nickname. Good times, good times!

4. Bouncy Balls - I had many different bouncy balls. I am glad to say that this trend is still alive in our house. Sami and Meag both love them. Now if only I could get them to stop bouncing them in the shower every night. Needless to say it is very loud downstairs during shower time.

5. Snoopy - I had not only Snoopy and all his clothes but also Belle and Spike. I still have one Snoopy outfit. It just happens to be his sailor suit. Fitting huh?

April and I also collected the little pom pom creatures. Does anybody remember these? Was it strickly a Southern California thing? I don't even know if they had a specific name. I did however see Valentine ones the other day at Michaels. Maybe I'll get them for my students and see if I can revive the trend. Oh and Mattie I too took my sticker book to school for trading. I tried to get both girls interested in it but it was short lived with both of them.

1. Sticker Books - I loved my sticker books, trading with friends, looking through my collection, getting the newest coolest stickers. Puffy stickers were my favorite, especially with googly eyes. As a 5th grade teacher, I REALLY wish this trend would come back. It would be nice to see some innocence again.

2. Music - Hours listening to so many varieties, so much money spent purchasing it, singing in musicals and choirs, playing piano, viola, and now acoustic guitar, and listening to my husband play his drums.

3. Camping and Fishing - Yes it is two, but for us they go hand in hand. Plus when we go to the Bass Pro Shop, we shop for fishing and camping supplies. And no trip to the local Wal-Mart would be complete without a stop in the sports dept., for for fishing and camping supplies.

4. Entertainment Electronics - Atari, Nintendo, Game Boy, iMac, iBook, iPod, stereos (with turn tables), boom boxes, walkman (yes, the tape
playing kind), etc.

5. Pictures - I have always loved taking pictures, took photography in high school, and lost count of my photo albums. As a kid, I spent many hours looking through my parents albums. I just love looking at pictures and remembering (if I was there), or imagining (if I wasn't there).

Forgot to post my list above:

1. Ballet - I love the ballet, took it as a child and was not "made" to be a ballet dancer but I still love it. One of the best experiences of my life was going to with my dad to see the American Ballet Theater perform Swan Lake in San Francisco.

2. Reading - I have always loved to read, I was known to be a Sweet Valley High follower. As I have gotten older my taste in literature has matured some but I still enjoy reading some of my daughters books.

3. Talking on the phone - I do consider this a hobby, I don't have a lot of time to dedicate to it but I do try. I could talk for hours on the phone. I find it easier to say things on the phone than in person sometimes. Yes this does include texting for me.

4. This is harder than I thought it would be! Stickers - I too was caught up in the sticker craze. I remember that we would go downtown to Sanrio AKA Hello Kitty and buy stickers by the dozens! That was a lot of fun.

Actually Pete said....
Skateboarding- when "poser" was an often used word and Tony Hawk wan't yet a video game.
Guitar, then Bass guitar moving on to drums, keyboards and so on and so forth. I didn't out grow wanting to be a rock star until about a year ago...
Science- more importantly Starlab (for Mattie) and anything to do with aeronautics, or space exploration.
Fishing.
Watching T.V. and I am getting damn good at this since we have had digital cable and 9 months of rain.......

1. Model cars. They were plastic. You had to glue the parts together, paint them and apply the decals. Some of them could be made into either stock or hot rod versions. All the extra parts were saved to make your own creations. This was before they locked the glue and paint behind the counter. Which leads to my next hobby.... just kidding.
2. Comic books. 12 cents apiece at the Greyhound Bus station. Marvel only please, no DCs. Still have my most valuable ones.
3. Records. Hundreds of them. All types. This continues to this day. I can't go into a thrift store or to a garage sale without checking for the one record I must have.
4.Gardening. There's just something about having your hands in the soil that is therapeutic.
5. Working on old Volkswagens. The optimum time being the night before vacation. This is just the time to finish building the engine. Extra points if you try to boost the horsepower by doing something you've never tried before.

P.S. Luisa, that evening at the ballet and dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe was indeed magical. I was so proud to escort you!

1. Garage sales
Yes, we have been doing this since the womb. Our mom started in high school and it is what Saturdays are all about, not sleeping in, like some people might say (Mom threatens to leave if you're not ready by 7:15). It's also a great way to familiarize yourself with a new city.

2. Food
I love shopping for it, cooking it, and especially eating it. If it was only a necessity of life then I would weigh 100 pounds. I also include drinking in this category.

3. Sports
My favorite is walking, another great way to familiarize yourself with a place. Growing up we used to take walks after dinner, and I especially remember a lot of walks with my dad, something we still do together. David and I have also walked miles and miles together, especially in the middle of the night in SF. Swimming, softball, tennis, and volleyball round out the top five, but really anything thats gets you breathless if fun.

4. Exploring
It's not about exotic destinations as much as finding something new even within your own hometown.

5. Water
Everything about it calls to me. Swimming, showering, just being near it is intoxicating. Growing up on the beach I love the ocean, but lakes, rivers, streams, even man made still call to me. You wouldn't think until you tried it, but throwing rocks in the water, not even skipping them but just throwing them is actually really fun (no I never sniffed Dads' glue, just Mr. Sketch markers).

I've had a little bit of a hard time with this one. I think I've always had things I liked, but not really considered them a hobbie. But here it goes:
1. Traveling - I will go anywhere and I love to see new places.
(ps I think this should be a "list", top 5 places you've been or would like to go)
2. Marbles - This one was seasonal in elementry school
3. Clogging - I actually liked all dancing, but this kind I did the longest.
4. Making Cards - I was in a card club that met once a month to exchange cards, I got the better end of the deal because my cards were not that great.
5. Water Sports - which is funny living in Utah and not growing up with a boat. But I like to wake board, scuba dive, and just play in the water.
Still loving the Wednesday Lists!
Love ya!

Brittney-
I immediately thought you'd put Orcas. I still think of you when I see them. Scottish dancing always makes me think of Buttney!

April-
Game Boy! That is an obsession in this house! nintendo DS rules!! I still use a cassette walkman also.

Luisa- You ARE good at the phone.

Pete-
I HEART BOYS IN STARLAB. (and I know you still want to be a rockstar!)

Dad-
The model cars was unexpected, the albums I was certain of. I was also waiting for hairstyles to show up on there.

Alex-
When I was in the hospital they asked if I was a drug user and for a quick second I wondered if I should mention Mr. Sketch. Damn you red marker!!

Kim-
I absolutely agree with the water. Like Alex said, it is intoxicating. Pete often wonders why I am in the shower for SO LONG. I just love the water. also, I've seen your cards and they are good!

Lastly, I think I should have added blogging to my list.

1. Latin dance - There was this great little club in Salt Lake, The Tropicana. I started going because I thought it would be a fun way to keep up on language skills, but the first time I danced I was hooked.

2. Cooking - I made a lot of really horrible meals when we were first married so that motivated me to learn. I have a special fixation with Rachael Ray and her 30 minute meals which I like to edit into my own 15 minute versions.

3. Rollerblading - I started in college then got better when I had to try to keep up with Jeremy. When we lived in VA there was a beautiful wooded trail that circled a golf course right by our house. I'd forget that I was excersing! I miss that.

4. Choral music - I'm not a good singer and you won't ever catch me singing a solo, but there's something wonderful about singing harmonies with a group. I did choir in high school and college and I try to keep it up at church when I can.

5. Piano - I hated practicing as a kid. Somewhere in high school I started to like it. Then I took one semester of private lessons as an adult and I loved it. I'm excited for the day when we have a house that could actually fit a piano in it and I can start playing again.

Mattie-
I hope when you see Orcas and you think of me it's not size related! And how dare you put that horrible name on the blog. It is now out there for eternity!!! I thought we were friends!!!
